Cod – Gadus Morhua

The world’s largest cod stock is located in Norway. As it is one of the most common fishes in Norway, It has created a basis for human existence along the coast. There are two main types of cod, the migratory, oceanic cod and the non-migratory coastal cod. The migratory cod is available only for a limited time each year, and is named “Skrei” in Norwegian, which translates to “the wanderer”. The name is given because of its epic swim through Arctic waters. This makes it more of a pelagic fish. The coastal cod on the other hand is a typical bottom-dwelling fish.

Cod fishing is carried out year-round and there is a broad product range. Fresh, frozen and fillets are the main products, but the cod is also available in several dried varieties. Cod is low in fat and is a good source of protein, vitamin B12 and selenium.
